ADULT Wingspan - 35 - 55mm. This is an easily identifiable sexually dimorphic species with the overall size being quite distinct. The male (Fig 1) has a yellow thorax, long grey wings that are striped black at the basal edge. The female has yellow wings that have two dark brown spots on each.
CHRYSALIS Hibernates in this stage in a weak cocoon.
LARVA Feeds on lichens.
BEHAVIOUR Attracted to light, sugar and flowers.
HABITAT Coastal areas with plenty of lichens.
FLIGHT PERIOD Single brooded. July to September.
STATUS Resident and immigrant in Southern Britain.
