ADULT Wingspan 36-45mm.  Pale brown forewings with darker somewhat burnt patches around the margin, a dark crested thorax, dark tornal mark and  the grey hindwings that are streaked with darker veining should give away the identity of this moth.  Beware of melanic forms.
CHRYSALIS Pupates within loose cocoon around plant roots.
LARVA Overwinters in this stage. Feeds on various grasses.
BEHAVIOUR Attracted to light, sugar and nectar rich flowers.
HABITAT Dampish areas such as fens and scrub where foodplant is abundant.
FLIGHT PERIOD May - July.
STATUS Common throughout.
