ADULT Wingspan - 16 - 20mm. Black head with ring of yellow at the rear, two yellow stripes on the thorax and with 3 (female) or 4 (male) yellow rings around the black abdomen make this small species easily recognisable. The dark tipped clear wings confirm the identification.
CHRYSALIS In branches of foodplant.
LARVA In branches of foodplant.
BEHAVIOUR Day flying. Attracted to pheromone lures or seen sunning itself on chosen foodplant.
HABITAT Allotments or elsewhere where foodplant flourishes.
FLIGHT PERIOD Single brooded. May to June.
STATUS Uncommon but widely distributed.
