ADULT Wingspan - 35 - 45mm. The wavy black crosslines and the chalky white '80' marking on a brownish wing that sometimes has a violet tinge is quite distinctive. A cylindrical posture is held by the moth when at rest. Hindwings are grey.
CHRYSALIS Overwinters as a pupa.
LARVA Grey and white in colour and feeds on Aspen.
BEHAVIOUR Attracted to light and sugar.
HABITAT Woods, parks and gardens.
FLIGHT PERIOD Single brooded. May to July.
STATUS Common resident in Southern Britain.
