ADULT Wingspan 35-40mm. Resembling a dead autumnal leaf and with a conspicious bronzey-orange marking on each forewing you would be hard pushed to mis-identify this stocky looking moth. White cross-lines and a scalloped outer edge the Herald is always a nice catch.
CHRYSALIS White and made of silk. Located between two leaves.
LARVA Long, green with yellow lines between each segment. Feeds on willows and other poplars.
BEHAVIOUR Attracted to light. Can be found during the day amongst leaf litter. In autumn feeds on berries and ivy blossom.
HABITAT Woodlands and gardens.
FLIGHT PERIOD June to November but can be seen all year round as it hibernates in outhouses and cellars. .
STATUS Common throughout.
