ADULT Wingspan - 77 - 33 mm. Always a nice catch with broad forewings that are distinctly marked. The kidney spot is golden yellow, above the dark central cross-band is a pinkish line and the oval area is somewhat bluish in appearance.
CHRYSALIS Pupates underground. Overwinters in this stage.
LARVA Feeds on a variety of ferns (mainly Bracken) and other plants such as willowherb, sallows and nettles.
BEHAVIOUR Attracted to light and sugar.
HABITAT Parks, woods and gardens.
FLIGHT PERIOD June to July with an occasional separate brood in August.
STATUS Resident and common.
