ADULT: Wingspan - 35 - 45mm. An all white moth with distinctive furry legs and thorax. and odd blackish brown marks on the trailing corner of the males forewing. The abdomen has a yellow tip. Female is larger. LARVA: Black and red with white and yellow stripes and an abundance of hairs that are an irritant to people. Overwinters in this stage inside a coccoon behind loose bark or within dead leaves. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light especially the males. HABITAT: Coastal areas, parks, gardens, suburban and urban areas. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded. July to August. STATUS: Resident and common but mainly southern.
