ADULT Wingspan 28-34mm.  The forewings are a a nice warm greyish-brown with occasional lilac tinges and dark brown cross-bands with a dark brown triangular patch near the wing tip.  Hindwings are brownish becoming darker towards the basal area with the outer half orange-yellow with black markings.
CHRYSALIS Overwinters as a cocoon in plant debris.
LARVA July and August on trefoils and clovers.
BEHAVIOUR Day flying often settling for long periods.
HABITAT Woodland clearings and damp meadows.
FLIGHT PERIOD Single brooded.  May to June.
STATUS Resident.  Common southwards becoming more local towards the north.
