ADULT Wingspan 45-60mm.  Black forewings with cream-coloured spots.  The thorax is wide, furry, black with creamy shoulder patches.  The abdomen is yellow towards the base with a red tip.  Hindwings are yellow with slightly variable black markings.  
CHRYSALIS Flimsy cocoon amongst plant debris.
LARVA Overwinters in this stage feeding in mild weather.
BEHAVIOUR Attracted to light but often seen by day.
HABITAT Woodland, coastal areas especially cliffs and sandhills.  
FLIGHT PERIOD Single brooded.  May to June.
STATUS Resident.  Local in the south.
