Wingspan 45-60mm. Black forewings
with cream-coloured spots. The thorax is wide, furry, black with
creamy shoulder patches. The abdomen is yellow towards the base
with a red tip. Hindwings are yellow with slightly variable black
markings. |

Flimsy cocoon amongst plant debris. |

Overwinters in this stage feeding in mild
weather. |

Attracted to light but often seen by day. |

Woodland, coastal areas especially cliffs
and sandhills. |
