VERNACULAR NAME: ELEPHANT HAWKMOTH

ADULT Wingspan 45-60mm.  Despite the similar Small Elephant Hawkmoth this is an unmistakable species.  The pink background with olive-green stripes is distinct with the head, thorax and abdomen of similar colouring.
CHRYSALIS Black, dotted.  Located in winter under moss or within plant debris.
LARVA July to September on a variety of plants especially willowherbs and bedstraws.
BEHAVIOUR Attracted to light.
HABITAT Anywhere where rosebay willowherb is abundant including rough grassland, coastal areas, woodland rides, hedgerows, gardens and parks.
FLIGHT PERIOD Single brooded.  May to July.  Occasional second brood from August to September.
STATUS Resident.  Common.
