ADULT Wingspan - 22 - 28mm. The central crossband with its distinctive reddish colour and black cross-lines is highly recognisable depsite being prone to variability. The moth has a grey ground colour and a smaller reddish area at the base of the wing.
CHRYSALIS Hibernates as pupa in a cocoon among plant debris.
LARVA Feeds on a variety of crucifers. Two-tone in colour primaily dark with two paler bands along each flank. Slightly hairy.
EGG Located on foodplant.
BEHAVIOUR Attracted to light.
HABITAT Woodland areas, gardens, parks, fens, heaths and hedgerows.
FLIGHT PERIOD 2 generations. May to June and again in August.
