FRUIT BODY Up to 14cm tall. A darkish fungus with a deeply pitted cap that is similar to one or two other species. The pits of this species however tend to come in vertical rows and the cap is more conical. The irregular honey-comb like surface is firm to the touch and the inner wall of each pit is tan to greyish.
GILLS/PORES N/A
FLESH Granular and brittle with no distinctive taste or smell.
SPORES Cream and elliptical.
HABITAT On well drained soil or disturbed ground beneath hedges and deciduous trees and shrubs.
SEASON Infrequent.  Spring.
EDIBILITY Inedible. r
