RUSSULA SANGUINEA

CAP: 4-10cm wide.  Flattened, quickly expanding to become depressed.  Sticky then matt.  Bright cherry red to pink, becoming wrinkled. STIPE: Equal, firm, reddish in colour but less so than cap.  Occasionally tapering.  Stains yellow with age. GILLS/PORES: White becoming yellowish buff, fairly well spaced, arched decurrent. FLESH: White but pinkish towards the surface.  Brittle becoming firm with a quite acrid taste. SPORES: Ochre, globose with isolated warts. HABITAT: In groups and rings under pines and larch.  Prefers sandy soils. SEASON: Common.  Summer to late autumn. EDIBILITY: Inedible.
