CAP 5-15cm in diameter. Covered at first with fine purple scales which gradually disappear to reveal yellow cuticle below.  Convex, wide with indistinct central umbo, later flat. 
STIPE Cylindrical, golden yellow with red velvety areas.  Evenly thick.
GILLS/PORES Pale yellow, thin, sinuate.
FLESH Pale yellow with resinous scent.
SPORES Hyaline, ovoid - ellipsoid, smooth.
HABITAT On dead stumps within coniferous forests.
SEASON Common.  Late summer - autumn.
