DESCRIPTION Up to 10mm long these bright red little beetles are not only distinctive but quite destructive too. Head and legs are black as well as the antennae. The grubs cover themselves in their own excrement and feed in groups on the leaves of the host plant.
BEHAVIOUR Usually seen on leaves of foodplant where they can be quite damaging.
DISTRIBUTION Mainly England and Wales but spreading northwards.
HABITAT Generally gardens or parks where its foodplants of lillies and fritillaries occur.
PERIOD March to September.
