DESCRIPTION The two narrow black bands against a yellowy-orange background on abdominal segments 3 and 4 are the key identification feature of this common hoverfly. 
BEHAVIOUR Hovering in between quick darting motions around flowers.
DISTRIBUTION Common throughout.
HABITAT Woodland rides, parks and gardens.  Can be found swarming in coastal areas after migrating.
PERIOD Late March to early September.
