DESCRIPTION Length between 7 - 12mm. A small flightless cricket usually located by sound. The body is dark brown and the pronotum and legs are noticeably paler in colour. Forewings are short and hindwings are absent. On the front of the head are four pale lines.
BEHAVIOUR Active creatures that feed on decaying matter and fungi. Pure ground dwellers whose song is a melodious purr that at first is difficult to locate.
DISTRIBUTION Uncommon only found in southern Britain.
HABITAT Open woodland clearings where they can be found in large numbers within leaf litter and grassy tussocks. Also found in dry walls or coastal scrub.
PERIOD June to October.
