DESCRIPTION Crustose. The thin grey crust has numerous slit-like black lines which are the spore producing apothecia also known as lirellae.The are two forms (serpentina) with curved lirellae and (recta) with staright lirellae grow in similar places but are never found on the same branch.
DISTRIBUTION Form serpentina is more common in Scotland whereas form recta is common throughout.
HABITAT On broadleaved trees.
