ADULT
Female to 18mm; male to 9mm. Females always the larger of the two sexes. Female (photo) usually recognised by a cross of pale spots on the abdomen that is usually a nice sandy brown colour to foxy red.. The banded legs add to the overall effect of a very attractive spider.
BEHAVIOUR Builds a large circular orb web between bushes and on other vegetation and is usually located sitting face down at its centre. The male will approach the female with caution when attempting to mate as they do occasionally becoming a welcome meal.
HABITAT Woodland, scrub, and gardens of all kinds.
DISTRIBUTION Widespread throughout.
PERIOD Adults are best seen from June until November.
