DESCRIPTION: Height up to 40cm. The flowers are found on long singular stems and are bi-laterally symmetrical. The flat-faced flower is made up of 5 petals with the upper two purplish, the side pair of a similar colour and the central lower petal paler with a bright yellow inner throat lined with a deeper purple. A short spur can be seen at the rear of each flower. The leaves of this plant are highly variable with the lower ones oval and the upper ones more lanceolate in appearance. HABITAT: Arable field margins, sandy grassland, dunes. DISTRIBUTION: Common throughout, less so in the South. FLOWERING TIME: May to September.
